FEACT Full Membership Meeting Minutes

Last month the Federal Executive Association of Connecticut met as part of our June Full Membership Meeting at the Defense Contract Management Agency office in East Hartford, Connecticut.

The meeting began with an introduction of our members and guests, followed by our Secretary’s report (meeting minutes previously emailed on 3/31/2023, and reviewed during our meeting. A motion to accept the meeting minutes was passed with unanimous consent. We then followed up with the treasurer’s report and our Committee Chairperson updates.

Awards

FEACT is seeking a Program Coordinator for this year’s awards program. Information about the position is available here (https://www.feact.net/post/help-wanted-sponsorship-program-coordinator) detailing duties, responsibility, and compensation. A brief summary is listed below:

  • Serves as our upcoming Awards Banquet Program Coordinator

  • The selectee will independently complete administrative, marketing and leadership tasks to include assisting the Awards Committee in securing sponsorship for Excellence in Government Awards Luncheon; and more (see link above)

  • The base salary amount is $900, in addition to a percentage of the sponsorship funds secured (more details available upon discussion).

Elections

We are sseking to have nominations over the summer, and hold elections by late summer; virtual component will remain, so we can vote virtually.

Executive Board Educational Opportunities available

  • The U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and the Federal Executive Boards (FEBs) are pleased to announce the 2023 Federal Executive Boards Federal Employment Series and Train-the-Trainer Workshop.

  • USAJOBS webinar professional training opportunities available (see attachment, but summary below)

    • Federal Executive Boards | 2023 Federal Employment Series and Train-the-Trainer Workshop

    • FEB Federal Employment Series | This three-session series is open to All Federal Employees and Uniformed Services. The series explains the Federal application and hiring processes to help Federal Employees find and apply for job opportunities and will help Federal Ambassadors gain the information needed to help job seekers to find and apply for Federal positions.

    • Session 1 - Navigating USAJOBS (Finding and Applying for Federal Jobs) | This overview covers key aspects of USAJOBS, the main online portal for Federal employment. The session includes how to create and manage a USAJOBS account/profile, tips on searching for Federal jobs, reviewing job announcements, applying for jobs, and how to follow up.

    • Session 2 - Writing Your Resume for Federal Jobs | This session reviews unique aspects of writing a résumé that is specifically customized to apply for Federal jobs. Learn what information is required for a résumé that will make you more effective in the Federal hiring process. You will learn what to include, things to avoid, and what makes a résumé for Federal employment different from those used for private sector and other employment.

    • Session 3 - Interviewing for Federal Jobs | Participants will be equipped to prepare for and engage in successful interviews for Federal jobs. We will cover actions you should take prior to, on the day of, and after your interview. Also, you will learn about the kinds of interviewing methods used by Federal agencies, the types of questions that may be asked during the interview, and how best to respond.

    • FEB Federal Employment Train-the-Trainer Workshop (2-hour webinar) | This two-hour workshop will provide a plain language, train-the-trainer experience that will enable you to effectively advise job seekers on finding and applying for Federal jobs. A Federal policy expert from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will provide up-to-date information on job search strategies, résumé writing, and interviewing for Federal jobs.

Congressional Update

  • Discussed how agencies interact with our congressional offices.

  • Discussed Social Security 2100 https://www.congress.gov/bill/116th-congress/house-bill/860

Federal Agency Presentations to Congressional Staff

We were joined by the offices of Congressman Courtney, Congressman Himes, Congressman Larson, and Senator Blumenthal.

During the meeting we discussed various topics, challenges and best practices affecting our Connecticut Feds. Some items include

  • Best practices and challenges with current hiring pipelines; of special interest, discussed agency’s HR processes for screening, usage of USA Jobs and USA Staffing, and timeliness of the entire process.

  • Current points of emphasis in our geographic area (FBI). Seniors being targeted by scammers, romance scams, combatting human trafficking and drugs.

  • Workforce development, assault weapon ban pro/cons, women/girls in sports

This two-hour workshop will provide a plain language, train-the-trainer experience that will enable you to effectively advise job seekers on finding and applying for Federal jobs. A Federal policy expert from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) will provide up-to-date information on job search strategies, résumé writing, and interviewing for Federal jobs.

This timely workshop will include details on Federal recruitment and hiring practices and strategies. These will be offered directly by OPM, whose goal and commitment are to ensure that you and career development professionals receive the most up-to-date insights to help supplement your efforts to recruit and hire a diverse, qualified workforce. You will be able to immediately apply the lessons in your daily interactions with job seekers and you get to keep all the original event materials.

The resources and links distributed in the series and workshop are up-to-date and are provided by the appropriate Federal Government source to support and strengthen your agency’s recruitment and hiring efforts.

We highly recommend that you attend the FEB Federal Employment Series or the comparable public events on USAJOBS at https://www.usajobs.gov/Notification/Events before attending this train-the-trainer workshop.
